Unimas creates patriotic song for women
The song, produced by Unimas head of music, drama and theatre, Mohd Hafiz Askiak, with lyrics by corporate communications assistant registrar Noorma Ismail, was in recognition of Dr Siti Hasmah's efforts to raise the standard of public health, especially among women and children outside the country, it said.
Mohd Hafiz said he agreed with the Deputy Prime Minister's call that patriotic songs be aired at all times and believed that "Srikandi Negara", with a pop ballad melody, would be more popular among Malaysians compared to patriotic songs with a march beat. Meanwhile, Noorma said she felt fortunate to be able to write the lyrics for the country's meritorious women whom she idolised like Dr Siti Hasmah.
"The lyrics were specially written as a gift by Unimas to raise the dignity of women who have contributed to the country and to fill the gap in patriotic songs for women," she said.
Meanwhile, the statement added that the university's Student Representative Council election Thursday saw female students securing seven out of 13 seats for the first time. A second year student was elected president, also for the first time. - Bernama (28 August 2003)
KUCHING - Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has written a patriotic song in recognition of Malaysian women's contributions to the country.
The university said in a statement here Friday that the song, entitled "Srikandi Negara", was specially written for the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, in conjunction with the honorary doctorate of Science conferred on her at a special convocation here on Aug 28.
